Q & A with Habitat Hero Richard Bourland
1. How long have you lived in Memphis? My entire life.
2. How long have you volunteered with Habitat? 5 years.
3. How did you get involved with Habitat? Construction Committee, Green Hat, House Lead and Construction Committee Chair.
4. What kind of activities have you participated in during your time as a volunteer?
I volunteer for several reasons. First, Habitat is my "reset" switch. It allows me to get out of my daily routine, switch modes and recharge my batteries. Secondly, Memphis is my home and I enjoy working in the community. It gives me an opportunity to seea side of Memphis that I never would normally see. Finally, I enjoy working and meeting the volunteers and homeowners.
5. Why do you volunteer your time with Habitat?
My favorite moment(s) is seeing when a volunteer gains the confidence to do something new. It's very fulfilling when a volunteer walks on the job site without knowing how to hold a hammer and is leading a crew by the end of the day. That's rewarding and good stuff.
6. Do you have a favorite Habitat moment you would like to share?
I've been blessed with the experiences that Habitat has brought me and has given me an opportunity to work very passionate people. I volunteered to learn some new skills but gained a lot more. I've also enjoyed sharing my experiences with my wife and sister by getting them involved.
