Rose Klimek, October 2008 Habitat Hero

Rose Klimek and Erica Gorman smile following the announcement of Rose as the October Habitat Hero during the Fall 2008 Home Dedication Cermony.

Q & A with Habitat Hero Rose Klimek

1. How long have you lived in Memphis? I was born here.

2. How long have you volunteered with Habitat? About 20 years off and on. I was on the Board for 8 years, I think.

3. How did you get involved with Habitat? I was asked to head up the Habitat House committee for AAL, which built Habitat homes many years ago. AAL was the forerunner of Thrivent, the Lutheran nonprofit that has built houses in 2007 and 2008. We have applied for a grant to build one in 2009.

4. What kind of activities have you participated in during your time as a volunteer? I have been a volunteer all my life except for 10 years when I worked for MIFA. I have worked in many church, community and professional organizations such as MIFA, Church Health Center, Habitat, Downtown Church Association and many more. I am the president of Thrivent in this area.

5. Why do you volunteer your time with Habitat? I am a MSW who believes in helping people who are trying to help themselves. Habitat homeowners historically make good neighbors and good citizens.

6. Do you have a favorite Habitat moment you would like to share? Many years ago I made a home visit to a handicapped man who lived in the worst living conditions I have ever seen. I helped him find better housing and about 10 years later it was my privilege to help build a Habitat House where that horrible house had stood.

7. Do you have any personal details you would like to add? My husband Walt and I have a blended family with 5 kids, 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. I am in the process of writing a book about the history of my family.
