A New Year, A New Home For a Family In Need

Another holiday season is approaching and a new year is upon us. For many, this is a time of resolutions to make us better people. For others, it's another year struggling to provide a safe, affordable home for their family. For over 26 years, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis' mission has been to help make these families' dreams of homeownership a reality.
Helping others is something we often think about during the holiday season but in the new year, how will you choose to make a difference in your community? By making a gift to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, you will help us continue our mission to end poverty housing in Memphis. Would you add another resolution to your list and support Habitat and its families? Remember, we're not only building new homes. We're building new lives and a new community! Thank you for your consideration of a gift and may you have a wonderful new year!

Remember, gifts made on or before December 31, 2009 are eligible for deduction for the 2009 tax year.

Memphis Habitat Breaks Ground on Trinity Park Neighborhood
Partners in the Trinity Park project join Dwayne Spencer (far right), executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, and Tom Faller (second from right), Memphis Habitat's board president, in the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Trinity Park neighborhood.
For several years, Trinity Park, a neighborhood of 38 Habitat homes, has been a brilliant dream for many people associated with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis. On Thursday, May 14, that dream came one step closer to reality as partners in the project joined Habitat's board members, sponsors, volunteers and staff for the official groundbreaking ceremony.
Held at Medal of Honor Park across the street from the Trinity Park site, Habitat's partners and friends gathered at 10 a.m. to listen to a short program before the project's partners turned the dirt and Martha Morton, the land donor, asked the bulldozers to start their engines.
Habitat expects to begin building homes in the Trinity Park neighborhood in Spring 2010.

Exotic Italian Car Show Proves to be the Hottest One Yet!
The 8th Annual Exotic Italian Car Show will be one that car owners, patrons and volunteers won't soon forget. The blistering heat definitely wasn't the hottest thing around with more than sixty beautiful cars positioned along Exeter Road on Father's Day, June 21st. The kids enjoyed face painting, fun games and contests that included Hula Hooping, a Water Balloon Toss and a Sack Race.
At 4:30 p.m., trophies were presented to the winners in seven categories including Best in Show. This year's Best in Show went to an orange Ferrari M16 from Nashville.

Spring Build Nears Completion With Only Two More Saturdays
The Youth United/Youth Build house looked move-in ready even before it received several coats of cheerful exterior paint. Painting, landscaping and touch up work are on the agenda for the next two Saturdays.
The forecast called for rain, but for once the bad weather held off until after 5 p.m. Volunteers spent much of their shifts working on exterior and interior paint work, and by the end of the day, almost all of the homes were coated with their new low-VOC paint colors. Painting will continue on Saturday, April 25.
Five of the six homes will be dedicated on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. All volunteers, sponsors and friends are invited to attend the dedications, which will be held at 2614 Pershing.
May 2nd volunteers may help with landscaping during the morning shift from 7:30 to 12:30. There is also a Family Day shift for volunteers of all ages from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about these opportunities, please contact Erica Gorman at egorman@memphishabitat.com.

Spring Build To Resume on Saturday, April 18
Volunteers from Second Baptist Church assembled wall panels on April 3 and 4. The panels will stand in front of Second Baptist through Easter Sunday. They will begin construction on their Habitat home on May 8.
Volunteers, sponsors, homeowners and staff got a break from the rain on Saturday, April 4, and as a result, volunteer turnout was incredible. Once everyone got through the registration line, they kept busy working on caulking, siding and painting.
During lunch, which was sponsored by Youth United in honor of Act! Speak! Build! Week, volunteers listened to a brief presentation by Lana White and Sonya McDaniel, two of Habitat's homeowners. Crystel Hardin also presented Youth United volunteer Melissa Moore with the March Habitat Hero award.
Work will continue on Saturday, April 18. Volunteers will be painting and working on trim work. Following April 18, there will be two more opportunities to volunteer - Saturday, April 25 and Saturday, May 2.

Week Three Marks the Halfway Point in the Spring Build
Rainy weather didn't scare away these volunteers from Faith Christian Church,
one of the Spring Build's sponsors. The group posed for a photo after finishing their shift on the build site.
After three wet build days, no one was surprised when they saw rain in the forecast for Saturday, March 28. Fortunately, the rain passed through Memphis rather quickly, allowing work to continue on the build site. Although the bad weather put the homes a little behind schedule, the volunteers, green hats, homeowners and staff worked diligently on roofing and siding, and they ended the day under sunny skies.
Work will continue on the homes this Saturday. Volunteers will be working on siding, painting and trim work. Following Saturday's Build Day, there will be three more opportunities to volunteer - Saturday, April 18, Saturday, April 25 and Saturday, May 2.

The Rain Continues on Week Two of the Spring Build
Volunteers from Church of the Holy Spirit try to stay dry under the registration tent after a wet morning on the build site.
A last-minute change in the weather forecast surprised many volunteers and staff members this past Saturday. The rain began to fall around 8:30 a.m., forcing Habitat's construction staff to cancel the remainder of the morning shift and the entire afternoon shift by 10:30 a.m.
In the event of bad weather, you can reach Habitat's weather hotline by calling 901.761.4771, ext. 321. The message will be updated by 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the build day, and it is updated throughout the day if the weather changes.

First Build Weekend is a Success in Spite of Wet Conditions
State Farm Insurance volunteers work alongside Erica Bailey to help build her new home. State Farm provided $15,000 in grant money to help support the Youth Build, a home that is funded and built by youth from area high schools, churches and other youth groups.
Habitat staff and seasoned volunteers weren't surprised when they saw the forecast for the first week of the Spring Build. Rain is a common occurrence during every Spring building season, and it's something everyone at the organization has come to expect.
Fortunately, the rain stopped on Friday morning, and everyone arrived at the build site ready to work. Volunteers dressed for the weather in overalls, rain coats and mud boots, and they helped each other maneuver the slippery site. The wet weather continued on Friday night, but it moved out just in time to resume building on Saturday morning.
By the end of the two-day build kick-off, walls were standing, trusses were up, and the houses were wrapped. According to the Habitat construction staff, the six homes are a little behind schedule due to the conditions, but overall it was a great weekend.
Thanks to everyone who braved the conditions to help change the lives of six families. Habitat's staff and green hats look forward to seeing you out on the build site again soon.
