Government Relations Manager

Starting Salary: $60,000

The Government Relations Manager will be responsible for leading the advocacy and policy efforts of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis (HFHGM). This position will lead efforts to change public policy, will report on our impact and success, provide mapping of our policy landscape, and track changes in our issues. The selected applicant will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community and policy organizations at local, state, and federal levels to advance and support current and future access to land encompassing the entire reach of HFHGM.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Drive Memphis Habitat’s implementation of Habitat for Humanity International’s advocacy platform and serve as key liaison with HFHI’s Government Relations and Advocacy team.
  • Partner with the President/CEO, senior leadership, and key staff on the identification of advocacy priorities and policy opportunities.
  • Collaborate with partners and coalitions to advance policy priorities. Manage lobbying efforts and track legislation by stance, region, and issue. Evaluate proposed bills for effectiveness.
  • Arrange and host annual briefing, activities, and interactions for the President/CEO with local elected officials such as legislative build day.
  • Provide briefings and talking points for President/CEO, senior staff, Board, and Advocacy Committee members on key advocacy issues.
  • Advocate for Memphis Habitat’s legislative agenda by cultivating relationships with lawmakers in Memphis Habitat’s service area by building effective coalitions, mobilizing supporters, and utilizing media opportunities to highlight campaign goals.
  • Develop winning strategies that engage key stakeholders and grassroots support to further Habitat’s mission and opportunities to work together on advocacy or other projects.
  • Represent Habitat at key legislative meetings and networking events.
  • Monitor/attend all pertinent local government meetings (City Council, County Commission, related committees, etc.) and monitor state-level and federal meetings/hearings including Habitat on the Hill in Washington, D.C.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit administration, public policy, public administration, or related field, or 5 years of related experience; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional and leadership qualities including dependability, initiative, adaptability, decisiveness, sound judgment, strategic thinking, ethics, team building, teamwork, compassion, and empathy.
  • Demonstrated success with identifying and securing funds from government agencies, foundations, and other strategic partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively promote HfHGM’s mission and inspire community support.
  • Housing industry/affordable housing experience a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or legislative software
