AutoZone, Habitat Heroes Complete Oakhaven Home

AutoZoners, local heroes complete home construction for family

Memphis, Tenn. Nov. 10, 2017 – AutoZone, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis and local military heroes came together to complete home construction alongside a local family during the annual Heroes Build Day event on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, in the Oakhaven neighborhood.

More than 40 active-duty, reserve and retired members of the military and first responder communities and AutoZone employees spent the morning volunteering alongside future Habitat homebuyers Gregory and Bernadette Howard. Members of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the Tennessee Air National Guard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other first responders participated in this annual event.

Memphis Habitat first launched Heroes Build Day in 2013 as a way to observe Patriot Day, the annual National Day of Service and Remembrance held in memory of those lost due to the Sept. 11 attacks. This year, AutoZone and Habitat chose to move the event to coincide more closely with Veterans Day, which is Sat., Nov. 11, 2017.

“Service is always at the heart of Habitat’s mission, and we so look forward to this event every year, working with members of our military and first responder communities to help local families build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter,” said Dwayne Spencer, President & CEO of Memphis Habitat. “Through shelter, we empower, and we are proud to work alongside our future homebuyers and these heroes to help make decent and affordable homebuying opportunities available for more local families.”

AutoZone has served as the event sponsor since 2015 and provides volunteers to work on the site.

“AutoZone is both honored and humbled to present the 2017 Heroes Build,” said Tim Young, Director of Talent Acquisition, AutoZone. “We are deeply grateful to the men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces — many who are current AutoZoners — who have served and sacrificed in order to protect our country and preserve our freedom.”
