Memphis Habitat, Republic Services Spruce Up 55 Homes in Castalia Heights

Volunteers across the metro area help beautify community during 1-day event

Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 2, 2018 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis is partnering with Republic Services to beautify 55 homes in the Castalia Heights neighborhood, install safety cameras, fencing and put on a block party with the community.

The work is through Republic’s National Neighborhood Promise program, which seeks to rebuild, revitalize and restore places and spaces in need, ultimately creating stronger neighborhoods. The work will consist of clearing leaves, landscaping, installing solar lights and other beautification tasks. This partnership will also see two SkyCop cameras with license plate readers installed on Carver Ave. at Hays Road and at Lapaloma Street, as well as iron perimeter fencing installed down both sides of Carver Ave. behind the future 32 lots Habitat will build homes on in the neighborhood.

“Collaborating with good corporate neighbors, like Republic Services, is essential to helping us have ongoing and substantial impact in our neighborhoods,” said Dwayne Spencer, president and CEO of Memphis Habitat. “We are so thankful for Republic’s support and shared interest in our vision – a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Through shelter, WE empower, and with supporters like Republic, we’re helping neighborhoods become stronger and more stable, one family at a time.”

Through Republic’s National Neighborhood Promise program, the organization aims to restore places and spaces where residents and employees want to live, work and play. They focus on projects and programs they believe can make a meaningful difference in local neighborhoods like beautification efforts, community cleanups and revitalization of public places, like parks, playgrounds and neighborhoods. Republic supports these efforts through granted funds, donated products and services and volunteer opportunities for their employees.

“At Republic Services, we pride ourselves on being good neighbors, and investing in the communities where our employees work and play is important to us,” said Drew Boyer, general manager at Republic Services of Memphis. “We feel privileged to work alongside our employees, these families and other volunteers to help enhance this community. Through our partnership with Memphis Habitat, we believe we are helping to strengthen the neighborhoods we share in Memphis and Shelby County.”

Habitat’s work in Castalia Heights began with the announcement of their newest neighborhood – Cedar Heights – in fall 2017. So far the organization has helped with several smaller beautification efforts in the neighborhood, completed 11 Aging in Place projects and expects to start building homes in the community in fall 2019.

Memphis Habitat is currently seeking support for its home-building efforts in 2019. For information on how to support and build with Memphis Habitat, contact Cameron Sanford, donor relations manager, at or 901-322-3532.
