Build Site Opportunities for Individuals

General Build Site Volunteer

These are our most popular volunteer opportunities, but also the hardest to come by.  Our house-building partners - the businesses, churches and other organizations that fund our house-building program - receive the first opportunity to build.  Occasionally we do have slots that are not filled by sponsors, and when that happens we fill in with individuals.  No previous construction or building experience is necessary.  Build site volunteers must be 16 or older.

Construction Committee

Habitat's small construction staff could not lead the volunteers on the build site without the generous support of Habitat's Construction Committee, also known as "Green Hats" because of the green hats they wear on site.  Most Green Hats came out to the build site as inexperienced volunteers and enjoyed themselves so much that they kept coming back until they were comfortable enough leading other first-time volunteers.

Members of the Construction Committee meet monthly, except during build months, to discuss upcoming projects and enjoy food and fellowship.  Click here to learn more about Construction Committee membership and activities.

Volunteer Support Team

The Volunteer Support Team serves as a welcoming/hospitality team at the build site.  They assist with volunteer registration, passing out snacks and drinks, lunch setup and logistics.  Volunteers must be 16 or older.  Please note that this is not a construction opportunity.  Click here to learn more about Volunteer Support Team activities.

ReStore Opportunities for Individuals

Individual volunteers are needed to become experts in different departments of the ReStore.  These positions require anywhere from a once-a-week to once-a-month commitment.  Training is completed during the first three to four shifts, and then we'll re-evaluate to make sure that you're happy with your chosen position.  Visit the Memphis ReStore website to learn more about the available positions.

The ReStore welcomes students that need community service hours for school.  ReStore volunteers must be 14 or older.

We also allow some court-ordered community service hours to be completed at the store.  Felony and/or charges related to aggressive or violent crimes, theft, robbery, or crimes against minors are not allowed, and other offenses are admitted on a case-by-case basis.

Non-Construction Opportunities for Individuals

Office Volunteers

Office volunteers provide support to various departments, including research, data entry, preparing mailings or assisting with special projects.  Opportunities are available Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Special Events

Special Event volunteers help with the planning and execution of various Memphis Habitat events, including Tool Box B.  Needs and tasks will vary per event, but may include soliciting auction items or event prizes, creating event decor, organizing logistics, or joining an event committee.

Family Services

Family Services volunteers work with families as they go through the Habitat program.  Opportunities include serving on the Family Selection committee, serving as a financial counselor during financial education classes, or assisting with homeowner application drives.  Volunteers also provide childcare for our homeowners while the parents attend financial education classes.  Background checks are required for all Family Services volunteers prior to service.
