The third annual Bluff City 10K attracted hundreds of runners who ran through Midtown Memphis in support of our work to empower homeowners to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. And, our homeowners were there to cheer them on! Check out our recap video below:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis CEO Dwayne Spencer has led our organization for 15 years and thinks of Habitat's vision daily. It's a vision he believes in, and Habitat's work has an impact that he understands well. During Habitat for Humanity's Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in August 2016, Dwayne first shared his personal story and why he feels so passionate about Habitat's work with The Commercial Appeal's Geoff Calkins. NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt took notice of that story, and on Sept. 12, featured Dwayne in a segment called "Inspiring America." Watch it below:
"Everything started from this house," says Maria, a Memphis Habitat homeowner since 2001. Maria wanted to buy a home for her children. She wanted them to know they wouldn’t have to move again. She wanted to feel secure, so her kids would feel secure. After trying to buy a home through traditional programs, Maria applied to buy a Habitat home in 2001 and was approved. Memphis Habitat launched its Neighborhood Revitalization effort in the Uptown neighborhood in 2012. This program expanded Habitat's mission to not only include new home construction but also critical home repairs for low-income homeowners, beautification projects and vacant property demolition. In November 2014, Habitat partnered with Lowe's as part of this effort. Watch the video below to learn more about Memphis Habitat's work in Uptown, and thank you to Lowe's for their support!
