Why Habitat is Needed

Poverty, Homelessness and Their Effects

  • 26.5 percent of Memphis residents live below the poverty line.

  • 12.7 percent of those have income at 50 percent below poverty level.

  • Many families in poverty pay more than 50 percent of income toward rent.

  • Families living in poverty experience various housing issues -- physical inadequacy of structure, overcrowding, cost burden, homelessness and emotional drain.

  • Low-wage families are at greatest risk of financial catastrophe.

  • A family's health and children’s educational performance is negatively impacted when they live in poverty.
