Meet James

Meet James, a veteran fighting for stability at home.
James is a proud U.S. Army veteran and a single amputee who, despite serving his country, now lives on the edge of poverty. He relies on a prosthetic leg and a manual wheelchair to get around, but his aging Memphis home makes even the simplest tasks a daily struggle.
Like many older homes in Memphis, James’s house was never built for accessibility. Unsafe entrances and outdated bathrooms have made it difficult and dangerous for him to live independently.
Sadly, James is not alone.
In Shelby County, nearly 7,900 older homeowners are in the same position: unable to afford the critical repairs and home modifications they need to live safely. And with 1 in 4 seniors in Memphis living in poverty, the need is urgent.
That’s where you can make a difference.
Through our Aging in Place program, Memphis Habitat is stepping in to help James and so many others live safely and with dignity in the homes they love.
When our team assessed James’s home, we saw what was needed: a wheelchair ramp, a new roof, and extensive bathroom modifications to make his home ADA-compliant. These repairs would normally cost thousands of dollars, far beyond James’s reach. Thanks to donor support, we’re making it all happen free of charge.
