Meet Deitriece

Deitriece

From Denial to Homeowner

For 10 years, Deitriece tried to purchase a home through banks and organizations, but every time, she was denied or only approved for loans that fell far short of what she needed. A $35,000 loan with high interest wasn’t nearly enough to buy a safe, stable home for herself and her four children.

Even with a master’s degree, the weight of student loan debt made her question her path. “I started to regret going back to school,” she told us.

Then Deitriece found Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis.

At Memphis Habitat, we believe Deitriece deserves more than broken promises and unfair loans. That’s why we offered her an affordable, no-interest mortgage, making the dream of homeownership a reality for a family who has faced years of closed doors.

We partnered with Deitriece through her homebuying journey, and she finally became a homeowner.

Now, for the first time in her life, she has a space of her own and a backyard where her children can play freely and safely.

Her story isn’t just about one family. It’s a reflection of a larger crisis in Memphis. Rising rent, limited inventory, and financial barriers are keeping too many families from building the stability and wealth that homeownership brings.

You can be part of the solution.

Memphis Habitat is committed to closing the homeownership gap and increasing access to safe, affordable housing in the 901 - but we can’t do it without you. Every donation helps another family like Deitriece’s build a future full of hope and opportunity.
