Meet Gwen

Help neighbors age with independence.

Gwen lives in a quiet neighborhood where most residents are retired - herself included. The neighbors look out for one another, creating a strong sense of community.

It was through one of these neighbors that Gwen learned about the Aging in Place program offered by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis.

Her home needed major repairs: damaged siding and rotted wood were replaced, a new roof was installed, the attic entryway was rebuilt, her bathroom was updated to be wheelchair accessible, and the sink's water pressure was restored.

These repairs not only made Gwen’s home safer but also allowed her to maintain her independence. “My independence is very important to me,” Gwen shared.

Before discovering Memphis Habitat, Gwen was preparing to take out a loan to cover the repairs. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, her home was repaired at no cost to her.

Right now, almost 88% of older Tennesseans live in homes built before 1980; which often need critical repairs and accessibility upgrades. Within 25 years, 1 in 5 Tennesseans will be over the age of 65.
